Buoyed Up

I spent an afternoon recently in the company of friends, talking about Burning Blue and how the film came to be. It was a rather special event because we were shooting material for Lions Gate Films who had requested interviews with various members of the team. We outlined what brought us together, talked about the journey from stage to screen, the issues raised in the film and the importance of telling the story today. Burning Blue is inspired by real life events.

It is David Greer’s story, but what that afternoon revealed was that Burning Blue has become more than that. As I was talking about the process of writing with David, I was buoyed up by the testimony of navy veterans who at some stage had personally thanked us for telling their story. I was inspired by the many actors who had brought Burning Blue to life on stage all over the world. I was humbled by the contribution of family and friends who had acted as extras, assistants, funders or location scouts in the making of the film. The spirit of all these people were in the room with us that afternoon and it was nothing short of magical.
